Quincey
(Told by Liz his proud owner)

In 1994 I lost my Golden Retriever and as my partner (now my husband) was looking for a German Shepherd for schutzhund  I decided that I would also get a German Shepherd. My friend Isobel Anderson recommended that I get a pup from Jemness Atlas so after a years wait and a search for a name, in September 1995 Quincey arrived.

When he was growing up I decided to show him as well as still carry on with his schutzhund training until the training became more intense. In is show career he was awarded reserve best puppy in show at his very first show, and also won quite a few BOB.

When he was about 18 months old he was playing over the Braid Hills in Edinburgh with our two other dogs when he did a couple of summersaults and ended up tearing his scapulas muscle. This left him with a slight limp which he still has to this day, and although it would have affected his show career it did not affect how he worked.

In his Schutzhund career we were constantly reminded that ‘he is off show lines’ so when we reached Schutzhund 11 we were really chuffed. The training for the schutzhund 111 was quite time consuming and our first attempt at it resulted in our failing by two points and our second attempt by just the one point. Although we were disappointed we were more than happy at Quincey’s performance. It’s nice to know that had the new rule change been in force then we would have qualified schutzhund 111.

On three occasions he has been a blood donor and helped save the lives of the three younger dogs for the first one we made the headlines in the local paper with a nice photo, and I was even interviewed on the local radio station.

I think his nature can be seen by the things that he has done and he is still doing. His schutzhund qualifications show that he does have working ability, but how he helps me out just now when I train young pups or ‘difficult’ dogs shows another side of his character. Pups just go rushing up to him or crawl over him and he just lies there lapping it up. With difficult dogs he just sits there with an old football in his mouth and if they get too much he just bops them over their head with the ball.

At nearly 12 years old he is still up for most things, like chasing our younger dog around or going for a swim in the sea or reservoir. His usual position at night is to lie upside down fast asleep.

Dear Joyce & Eddie
,Yesterday while Bill & I were out a walk with the dogs Quincey had a heart attack,
He had been chasing Arko & playing with his ball, I was taking pictures of him & as you can see he looked a picture of health
A few minutes after the last picture was taken he gave a couple  of coughs & I went  over to him & he seemed ok, then he went over to the side of he path and lay down, he just looked at me and slowly put his head between his front legs as if he was sleeping,
I said to Bill I think he's gone,   as Bill went to get the van Quincey came round, we just sat together in the sun,

We  had to lift him into the van & by the time we got home he had died in my  arms in the van.
The vet came to the house to check him & there was no swelling anywhere, thats why we think it was a heart attack.
I am gutted & devastated as he was my shadow, where I went he went, part of me has gone with him.
The only consolation is that he was out enjoying himself when it happened, best way for him but devastating for us

Hard times ahead.
Rest in peace my friend Quincey
Liz

Hope you are feeling a bit better....They say time heals but it still hurts..I still think of Freddi and have a good cry..with having his grandson Uno around me all day he is allot like Freddi in his characteristics it is a constant reminder of what we lost and how special he was to us..

The one thing Liz you can take heart from is he was with you at the end and doing what Quincey loved..having fun..

He was your special friend and he knew it,  he had a super life with you,  a life most dogs can only dream of..

I have update his page for the final chapter in this special dogs life..
I am so proud to say Freddi was the sire of this lovely dog

Love to you and Bill and thank you for keeping us informed of all the stages of Quinceys life as I feel we have lived them with you..
